What Does it Mean to be Community-Centered?

A "Community-Centered" learning environment is characterized by:
  • encouraging group discussion and asking questions
  • encouraging learning from mistakes
  • mixing differing perspectives and culture

Before the students begin learning the stages of mitosis, the class will be divided into 5 groups and each assigned a stage of mitosis. In this group, students will be given a worksheet outlining the steps in their stage of mitosis to use as a reference as well as their textbook to learn their assigned stage. Like a Jigsaw exercise, each student in the group will become a master of their stage. Once mastering the stage, each student in the group will be given a number and then separated into a new group where the group will consist of one member from each stage. The student will then be required to teach their stage to the rest of the group, ensuring that each student knows all the stages required for mitosis.
